BragGINg Rights - Gin at Pahit, Sin Chew Kee

Walk a little too briskly and you might just miss this watering hole in the wall. Occupying what used to be a BIG venture, Barlai, on the ground floor of one of Malaysia’s most famous boutique hotel franchise, Sekeping Sin Chew Kee, Pahit (Bahasa Melayu for ‘bitter’), is our new favourite joint serving up the best potions that will have us lonGINg for more. (Forgive the overuse of puns)

Literally bittersweet

With a location smack in the middle of a row of historical shophouses dating back to the ’20’s that will have you transported back in time, a rustic setting complete with outdoor rattan chairs that we Malaysians are all too familiar with, and, of course, 80-odd different selections of gin, it’s no wonder that Pahit has earned quite a name for itself.

If you’re looking to be spoilt for choice, look no further. Upon inspection of the menu, I had no idea what to order — everything sounded glorious. The fruit infused gin concoctions are courtesy of Pahit’s head honcho, CK, who also happens to be the one that stirs up your invigorating cocktails at Coley’s Bangsar. Tell me mixes like “pomelo & elderflower”, “lychee & ginger flower” and “lemon & kaffir lime” doesn’t make you want to overdose on them and wake up with a bad hangover.  We opted for a bottle of Citadelle, which was priced at RM320. A bottle of Bombay Sapphire is RM340, and Hendricks’ at RM440, which should give you a rough picture of the prices.

If you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle yet find solace in your own city, Pahit is the spot to be. It’s where you can catch up with friends over a drink or two sans the headbanging music playing in most bars, kick back and relax. Pahit hits the proverbial nail in all the right spots.
